5 Helpful Tips for a Successful Cord Blood Collection
Before you know it 40 weeks of waiting, 280 days of planning, and the big moment will finally come. You’ll find yourself at the hospital ready to deliver your baby!
So whether you’ll have lots of time to settle in and tuck your overnight bag in the corner with your ViaCord collection kit resting nearby, or you’re rushing in with that overnight bag flung over one arm and your collection kit under the other –we want to ensure that the process of collecting your baby’s cord blood goes as smoothly as possible.
Here are a few tips to help you and the medical staff work together to have a successful collection:
1. LET THE STAFF KNOW UPON ARRIVAL
When you check into the hospital let the medical staff know you’ve chosen to collect your baby’s cord blood. Even if your doctor already knows or it’s noted in your files, informing the staff at the hospital is very important. And if you’re in labor during a rotation, inform the replacement staff as well.
2. COLLECT EVEN WITH A C-SECTION
Make sure it’s known that you want to collect your cord blood regardless if you have a vaginal or c-section delivery. Sometimes the collection kit gets left behind with unplanned c-sections.
3. NO NEED TO POKE YOU TWICE
ViaCord requires a sample of mom’s blood as part of the collection process. Let the medical staff know this, so when they draw blood for other purposes they can collect the maternal blood sample for ViaCord at the same time.
4. KEEP THE KIT VISIBLE
With all the breathing, pushing and sheer amazement, it’s easy to forget about the cord blood collection. As a reminder, keep the ViaCord Collection Kit clearly visible during your delivery. Lay it on a nearby table and designate a person in the delivery room to be in charge of ensuring the medical staff gets the kit in time for collecting the umbilical cord blood.
5. DESIGNATE A CALLER IN ADVANCE
Know ahead of time who will be responsible for calling ViaCord after the collection has taken place to review contents and arrange the courier pick-up. We recommend this be someone other than Mom. Mom has enough to do that day. And we help you remember by including a bracelet in our Welcome Pack for that special someone to wear.
We hope you find these tips helpful and we wish you a smooth delivery and a successful collection.
